I hope my mother weighs in on this one
Complaining about bad parenting is, it seems, a special thing you do when you are my age and don’t have kids. I try to hold my tongue because I am sure that one day it will be my own little darlings pissing off the childless twenty-somethings. But: two incidents of appalling public parenting in three days means that I can’t quite hold back anymore.
First: restaurant, Saturday morning,...
Fiscal irresponsibility
I went out to buy some nice food, but today is the kind of summer Sunday where you quickly forget about pesto and spend all your cash on Columbia Road on fat peonies and fragrant lillies and go home and eat your pasta plain.

Lydia: If I ever get married, you are totally being my bridesmaid, Jean.
Jean: Really? That's so touching!
Lydia: Yes, you're my only friend who would both look good in a powder blue strapless dress and who could easily dispatch grope-y old men.
Film review
So! I saw The Dark Knight last night at the Imax, which I always want to write ‘iMax’ because I have been brainwashed by Apple. In any case, I though that Heath Ledger was tragic, scary, and had a very good American accent, all of which are reasons to give him an Oscar. However! As is always the case with me and action-y films, I couldn’t quite understand WHY the evil guys were...

Maybe the end of July is not great
Maybe the end of July is not great because it is six weeks until autumn but you can still feel the nights getting shorter, and suddenly you realise that the summer that you have been so ardently anticipating since March is already on the wane, but it will be weeks and weeks still before you can wear a scarf and crunch leaves and drink coffee to keep warm at pavement cafes.
Or maybe the end of...
Why it is very good that I'm working from home...
I felt like an absolute monster when I woke up this morning. The reason for it was not particular - indeed, inexplicable - but nonetheless I was in a state of blind rage that could not be ameliorated by my usual morning-rage-amelioration techniques of coffee and shower and porridge (which I was out of, GAH). Fortunately, Bex is away on holiday, because I am certain that if I had encountered anyone...

I survived
Three days in a field with music and greasy food and enforced fun. And lovely friends, who made it bearable. Rarely have I loved Hackney so much, however, as I did tonight as the cab drove me home through the familiar, concreted streets.
A proper, hilarious recap tomorrow. Now I have to take a very hot bath and use several different kinds of moisturiser.
Why
is it that the only thing harder than writing is reading the stuff that you’ve written with a critical eye?
Unfortunately, I don’t think any of the people in possession of my favourite critical eyes are even awake yet.

The saddest part
Tonight on an escalator in Embankment Station, a strange man who I happened to be standing next to tried to kiss me. He loomed over and I could smell the beer on his breath and when I pushed him away he called me a bitch.
The saddest part is that I expect that on occasion his seduction technique is successful.

Oh, how I love Peter Bradshaw. Even though he makes me never want to go to the cinema again.
Patriotic curation
Jean: Your 4th of July party looked really fun. I'm sorry I missed it. Especially the patriotic decorations. My cab driver might have even allowed me to attend.
Sebastian: Well, I can't take all the responsibility. Dan curated it.
Jean: I love curation. It makes every act sound important. 'How was lunch, Jean?' 'It was great, I curated it.'

It is going to rain for the rest of the summer; it is going to be the wettest summer in five years. When even actual English people are saying things like, ‘What’s the point of living in this country?’ one begins to wonder if it’s time to move on.
But don’t worry. I’m staying put, even as my hair frizzes and my shoes squelch and I take people’s eyes out...
CPH Mark 2
I am back from an excellent trip to Copenhagen. I shall offer a nice photo essay of the jaunt, as soon as I finish reclaiming some of the sleep of which I was bereft while shacked up in the Cabinn City, which offered ‘cheap luxury’ by which they just meant ‘cheap’. Ow.
