On golden birthdays
It was the spring of our freshman year in high school. It’s my golden birthday, said my friend. It’s the 15th of March, and I’m turning 15! That won’t happen to me, I said, for, like, EVER.

On the trouble with interviews
Today in British journalism: everyone’s been going mental after it was revealed that Johann Hari, a leading interviewer (whose work I have often admired) has included quotes in his interviews that he’s extracted from other places - without citing their sources. Writing interview-based pieces is one of my favourite things to do. They’re an opportunity to meet extraordinary people...

On things I like this week
Liquid Eyeliner | Last week my therapist and I discussed my thirtieth birthday and the creeping anxiety that’s accompanied its approach. I think, I said, it’s because for most of my twenties I’ve felt like I must achieve things in my twenties because then they will be more impressive. For example, now I’ll never publish a novel before I’m 30. Unless I finish it in...

On a curious satisfaction
Yesterday I went to the doctor. It was the first time I’ve gone to the doctor for an ailment (as opposed to a routine test/prescription refill) in well over a year, because the NHS has taught me that there’s not much point in going to the doctor for an average ailment. Unless it is a really really serious ailment, they generally tell you to go home and drink a lot of fluids, because...

On things I'm currently endorsing
Taking the bus. My secondhand bike is officially too dangerous to ride and I am almost but not quite eligible to get a new one through my office’s Cycle To Work scheme. So I’ve been taking the bus and finding it very pleasant: fewer elbows than the Tube, fewer near-death moments than cycling. Lots more time to read. Better people-watching and eavesdropping. | Top tip: pay for the...

dailykayla asked: Yesterday you mentioned making cakes in microwaves. As someone who is deathly afraid of her current gas oven, I am very interested in this. Do tell. (I hope it was not a joke...I'm looking forward to microwaved cakes!) :)
