KT went shopping at FOPP last night.
Let me see what you bought, I said, going through the bag. Oh! Monster, by REM. That was the first CD I ever bought. Well, it was a cassette tape.
Really? KT said.
Yes! I said. I was twelve! But to be honest, I bought it because I knew that one day someone would ask me what the first album I ever bought was and I wanted it to be something cool. Which is why I picked Monster, even though probably what I really wanted to buy was something by Mariah Carey.
Oh, Jean, said KT. You really thought that was important when you were twelve?
Yes, I said. And look! It worked. It was like I was planning for this exact moment.
Except that then you explained it to me, said KT.
Right, I said. Right.
