“The moment in which I turned the pan over and let the cake (or muffins, or a loaf of bread in extreme circumstances that begged for extra stress-relieving kneading) slide out and plop lightly on to a cooling rack served as a reminder, each time, that I did have the capability of creating something – the munching of which made for a very nice accompaniment to whatever I was meant to be writing. In the evenings, my flatmate would come home and assess how well my day had gone depending on the amount of fresh cake in the house. ‘How’s it going?’ she would say, regarding my messy desk and nervously chewing on a brownie.”
