Notes from Schleswig-Holstein

- Dreaming: that I was writing the AP German language exam - something that I never did in high school. Evidently buoyed by the confidence of four days in Germany, my subconscious seemed confident that I would manage to scrape a passing mark, but I was also extremely confident (in sleep) that there was still no way that I would ever be able to use the genitive case correctly.

- Watching: Christiane read Himglish and Femalese; waiting hopefully for laughs and raised eyebrows and nods. Apologies to Christiane for a very stressful reading experience.

- Reading: Valley of the Dolls. What an amazingly awful and compelling book. More on that when I return.

- Eating: cheese and liverwurst and homemade jam and then more cheese.

- Otherwise: swimming in the lake and the Baltic Sea; riding a twenty-year-old bicycle around the woods, speaking German like a thirteen-year-old and singing songs from Frau Mayer’s Deutschklasse (‘Ich bin auslander und spreche nicht gut Deutsch’) and being so relaxed I can barely stand upright. Thank goodness there’s a hammock.
