Today was the first day of the rest of my career: as a fulltime freelancer, working from home. Happily, I actually have quite a bit of work to do, but unhappily - as anticipated - I find the lack of colleagues troubling because I have no one to make tea for or to tell jokes to.
“I have no one to tell jokes to!” I said to my friend S. “I need to get a dog.”
“Dogs don’t laugh at jokes,” he said.
“They wag, though,” I said. “That’s essentially the same.”
This is going to be difficult.
(If anyone who reads this has handy work-at-home tips, I’d be grateful! jean at jeanhannahedelstein dot com. Probably in the New Year I will rent a desk somewhere, but until then it’s just me, my living room, my laptop, and the possibility of naps.)
